Third place

Mary’s Coffee Express, Mount Horeb
If there’s a bright spot to be found in the horrible recession of 2007, it’s scones. Specifically the moist, flavorful scones at Mary’s Coffee Express in Mount Horeb. You see, Mary Hanson had just opened her small coffee shop on Springdale Street–a drive-through operation connected to the Cenex gas station on the eastern edge of town in July–when the economy crashed. Afraid that lattes and mochas alone wouldn’t keep her new business afloat, she drew on her upbringing as the daughter of a baker. Her not-so-crumbly scones nicely complement her coffee drinks, all-fruit smoothies and new power smoothies, as well as her specific customers. “Most of our business is drive-through, so most people eat them in the car,” she says. So which of the scones (which are also available at Java Cat and Gloria Jean’s in Madison) is the most popular? “Blueberry lemon, followed closely by Door County cherry almond,” Hanson says. “And, yes, the cherries are from Door County.”

Winner: The Mixing Bowl, Sauk Prairie. Second place: Firefly Coffee House, Oregon.
