Best of the ‘Burbs 2015: Fish fry

Ask Mid Town Pub’s sixty-eight-year-old owner Joel Egan why his fish fry is among the best in the Madison suburbs, and he’ll tell you exactly like it is. The hand-breaded walleye and beer-battered cod à la New Glarus Spotted Cow are just downright good. The grilled cod, lightly dusted with lemon pepper, is something you’ll have a hard time finding anywhere else. And he doesn’t fuss with all-you-can-eat; he serves three huge pieces with each dinner, some walleye pieces as big as a skateboard, Egan claims. “UW football players come in here, and it’s enough,” he says. Egan opened the place about nine years ago, and he’s become a fixture at the family-friendly Middleton pub. “He is here every day. This is his place. Everybody knows him,” general manager Lacey Drury says. The food is great and the service is friendly, says Drury, but Egan’s personality and passion forms the crux of the pub’s success. Mid Town also picked up a win this year in Madison Magazine’s Best of Madison readers’ poll for “Best Neighborhood Bar.”
