Bernard E. “Barney” McDermott, 80, of Platteville, died on Saturday, August 11, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center, Dubuque.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville. Father Faustino Ruiz and Deacon Bill Bussan will officiate. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Platteville, at a later date. Chapel Military Rites will be accorded by American Legion Post #42 and VFW Post #5274. Friends may call from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at the Melby-Bendorf Funeral Home & Crematory, Platteville, where there will be a parish rosary at 3:45 p.m.; friends may also call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. “Barney” was born on May 30, 1932 in Darlington, Wisconsin, the son of Michael Leo and Catherine Violet (Miller) McDermott. He was united in marriage to Joyce Howell on September 19, 1953 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville. Barney served in the United States Marines where he was stationed in California. After serving his country he worked at Ostby Motors in Darlington. Barney worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for 32 plus years retiring in 1987. He worked as a machinist, in assembly and in shipping. After his retirement he enjoyed being a greeter at K-Mart in Platteville. He was active for over 30 year with Mended Heart’s at Mercy Medical Center. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Platteville, and UAW Local 94. In 2000 he was Platteville’s Father of the Year. He enjoyed going to the Platteville Senior Center, and was an avid Packers and Brewers fan. Barney especially enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family.

Barney is survived by his wife, Joyce; four children, Dianne (Lonnie) Klein of Sherrill, IA; Mary “Jo” (Steve) Habel of Dyersville, IA; Michael McDermott and Patrick (Melissa) McDermott all of Platteville; 13 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and his beloved dog, Gracie Mae. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter, Debra Specht on February 24, 2004.
