OREGON – Bernadine “Bernie” Treichel, age 81, of Oregon, passed away on Monday, July 19, 2021, at UW Hospital and Clinics.

She was born on Dec. 3, 1939, in Greenwood, Wis., the daughter of Albert Erwin and Agnes (Bizjak) Wehrmann.

Bernie grew up on the family farm, the first of five sisters. She graduated from Loyal High School in 1957, and finished nursing school in Milwaukee in 1960. She married James “Jim” Treichel on May 11, 1963, in Oconomowoc. Bernie worked as an RN and Nurse Practitioner for 32 years in the University’s residency program. She was a founding member of the Dane County chapter of Habitat for Humanity and was a very active member of Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ. She was honored by Habitat for Humanity for her work by naming a street after her in one of their developments.

Bernie loved her family and taking vacations with them. She enjoyed traveling all over the United States but trips out west were her favorite. She also loved her visits to England and Germany. Bernie had an amazing green thumb and a passion for growing hostas. She enjoyed her membership in the American Hosta Society.

Bernadine is survived by her two sons, David Treichel and Barry (Lupa Luna) Treichel; and sisters, Betty Comstock, Judy (Russ) Haslow, Sherri Stebbins and Bonnie (Ray) Weyer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and brother-in-law, Tom Comstock.

A memorial service will be held at ORCHARD RIDGE UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, 1501 Gilbert St., Madison, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 28, 2021.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at UW Hospital for the care and compassion that they have shown to Bernie and the entire family during this difficult time.

Memorials may be gifted in Bernie’s name to Habitat for Humanity of Dane County or Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ.
