Beloit uses National Night Out to rebuild trust with community

With a police leadership shakeup, Beloit’s interim Chief David Zibolski used the department’s National Night Out event to work on building trust.

Dozens attended Beloit’s event, which was one of some 34 million across the country taking part in the annual crime-fighting block parties.

Zibolski said, as he visited 30 communities last night, his goal was to meet as many people as he could.

“And I hope the message they received is that the city and the police department is responsive and concerned about the needs of their particular neighborhoods in the community at large,” Zibolski said.

Zibolski also said citizen partnerships will be curtailed, which the interim chief said will be a department focus over the next 30 to 60 days.

An investigation continues into Chief Norm Jacobs and Deputy Chief Tom Dunkin, who were put on leave in June over leadership questions.
