Belleville students surprise veterans with ‘Quilts of Valor’
A group of eighth-grade students at Belleville Middle School surprised three local veterans with quilts they made to honor their service.
The students worked for three months on the quilts at a local quilt shop and documented the process. They presented the quilts Wednesday to three veterans. The veterans served in Iraq, Afghanistan and Vietnam.
“Very honored and just knowing that people still are about veterans and this country…it makes me feel good, it makes me feel very good especially considering what’s going on in this world today,” veteran Kevin Long said.
The students chose fabrics representing military and family experiences, and researched the wars at the library.
Long’s daughter was among the group that surprised him and the two other veterans Wednesday. He said he wants to hang his new quilt in his house, so whenever someone comes in they can appreciate it as well.
“I think the kids did a beautiful job, and I want to express my deepest appreciation to all of them, to this entire school,” Long said.
