Beaver Dam man sentenced after ramming car into middle school
JUNEAU, Wis. – The man who drove his car into Beaver Dam Middle School last fall will spend the next 32 months in prison.
Roy Cortez was sentenced in Dodge County Court Monday. He was convicted of eluding officers and causing damage to property in December. Along with the 2 years and 8 months behind bars, the Dodge County District Attorney’s office says he will serve 3 years of extended supervision.
Officers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance in August 2019 when an intoxicated Cortez broke a window and fled the scene. The responding officers eventually pursued the vehicle the 22-year-old was driving. He failed to stop and instead, sped up and crashed the car into Beaver Dam Middle School.
The crash created a hole that was roughly 30 feet wide and more than 6 feet tall. The damage was estimated at more than $2 million.
