Beata Nelson breaks national record
Finishes 100 yard butterfly in 51.7 seconds
MADISON, Wis. — Verona/Mount Horeb’s Beata Nelson expected to contend for state championships Saturday at the UW Natatorium, but even she was pleasantly surprised by the results.
Nelson won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 53.15 seconds. The big story was the 100 yard butterfly. Her time of 51.7 seconds broke the national record, previously held by Kathryn McLaughin of Rancho Santa Margarita Cathlic at Riverside, CA, who swam the event 51.78 seconds.
“My jaw dropped when I looked up at the board and saw that time,” Nelson said.
Nelson also won a state championship in the 200 yard freestyle relay, a team she anchored.
