Barbara Dee Meyer
Barbara Dee Meyer, age 83, passed away unexpectedly at her home in Prairie du Sac on Sun. Jan. 29, 2017.
She was born Jan. 20, 1934 to the late Harrell H. and Margaret (Watson) Harris. Barb graduated Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, IL; class of 1951. She furthered her education at Beloit College and graduated from University of Wisconsin, Madison with a B.S. in Language Arts; speaking fluently in French, Portuguese, and Spanish. Barb was a member of the Alpha XI Delta Sorority and was an active member of the American Association of University Women.
She was united in marriage to R. Paul Meyer at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, Sauk City on Aug 20, 1955; he preceded her in death on May 17, 2006. Both Barb and Paul were second generation insurance agents and together they owned and operated Meyer Insurance Agency in Sauk City, from 1955 until their retirement in 2004. They were members of the Independent Insurance Agents of Wisconsin (I.I.A.W.) and the Professional Insurance Agents Assoc. (P.I.A.). Barb and Paul shared leadership responsibilities in two organizations, the August Derleth Society and the Sauk City Cemetery Assoc. Board. They were active in the local Chamber of Commerce, and in Sauk County parks and recreation expansion.
Barb was active in her church, the First United Church of Christ in Sauk City. She was the first woman voted into the Church Consistory and served in this capacity for several years. She was also involved with many of the congregation’s activities, including the church choir, Mother/Daughter nights and Christmas events.
She was an articulate writer and thinker. Her local news articles and spotlights on human interest appeared regularly in the Capital Times. Barb also enjoyed a range of other activities, including painting, boating, traveling, antiquing, and spending her winters in Naples, Florida.
She is survived by her children, Jon (Patricia) Meyer of Ridgewood, N.J., Gretchen (Randy) Diffendorfer of Sauk City, Lise (Dan) Kobussen of Sauk City, and Chris Meyer of Prairie du Sac; 10 grandchildren, Anna Meyer, Lindsey (Court) Sheldon, Christian Meyer, Johnny Wertz, Anthony (Sabrina) Bigford, Nickolas Gosewehr, Emilie and Kiersten Kobussen, Edward (Jessie) Powell and James Meyer; 8 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Nancy Schamberger; other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Fri. Feb. 3, 2017 at Graceway Church, 65 13th St., Prairie du Sac, WI. A visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm on Thur. Feb. 2, 2017 at Hooverson Funeral Home, 251 Water St., Sauk City; and one hour prior to service at the church. Interment will be held in the Sauk City Cemetery.
