The University of Wisconsin Badgers men’s hockey team will play Minnesota and Notre Dame will play Miami of Ohio in an outdoor college hockey doubleheader Feb. 17 at Soldier Field.

The Hockey City Classic will be the first outdoor game in the modern era for three of the schools: Miami, Minnesota and Notre Dame.

Wisconsin has played two outdoor hockey games before. One at Lambeau Field in Green Bay against Ohio State in 2006 and the other against Michigan at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison in 2010.

Chicago hosted the NHL Winter Classic on New Year’s Day in 2009 when the Chicago Blackhawks played the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field.

“I never thought I’d be playing hockey here. Growing up, it’s always a dream to be playing at the United Center and you never think about playing at Soldier Field. Now that it’s come to reality. it’s something that’s very exciting for both me, my teammates, my family and everybody,” said Frankie Simonelli, a Badgers defenseman who is from Bensenville, Ill.
