Axford blows lead, Brewers lose in ninth
Fiers great start ends with 3-2 loss
MILWAUKEE — Brewers closer John Axford turned a 2-0 lead into a 3-2 loss as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for the win Monday night at Miller Park.
Brewers starting pitcher Mike Fiers allowed four hits and four walks, but didn’t allow a run and was in line for his fourth win of the season.
But after Francisco Rodriguez pitched a scoreless eighth, Axford fell apart in the ninth.
After loading the bases, Axford gave up a two-run single to Matt Holliday, then another run scoring single to Allen Craig.
The Brewers managed only seven hits off Cardinals starter Lance Lynn and relievers Barret Browning and Jason Motte.
Corey Hart hit his 17th homer of the season, and Ryan Braun added a run-scoring double in the eighth to give the Brewers a 2-nothing lead.
Motte (4-3) picked up the win, Axford (2-6) was tagged with the loss.
Milwuakee is now 42-47 on the season.
