Award-winning student honored with trip to see Golden Gate Bridge
MADISON, Wis. — Dane County agencies are coming together to send a woman to see the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, fulfilling a lifelong dream of hers, according to a news release.
Angela Campbell, an award-winning student with an intellectual development disorder and member of The Arc, is a huge fan of the Golden Gate Bridge. While accepting an award earlier in 2019, she said it was her dream to see the bridge in person, according to the release.
“I have a tiny, tiny, tiny Golden Gate Bridge that I usually put in my pocket and show people at work,” Campbell said.
Campbell was surprised Wednesday with two plane tickets to San Francisco. Her case manager and job coach, Kathy Walters, will be accompanying her on the trip over a long weekend in January.
“What I’m really looking forward to is seeing the Golden Gate Bridge through her eyes,” Walters said.
County leaders first learned how much Campbell loved the bridge when she won a self-advocacy award earlier this year.
“We are excited to provide Angela with the opportunity to travel to San Francisco and view the Golden Gate Bridge,” Dane County Executive Joe Parisi said. “A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped make her dream come true. We know this trip to San Francisco means a lot to Angela, and we hope she makes some great memories while there.”
According to the release, Campbell has a vast collection of books and models of the iconic bridge. She also knows a huge variety of facts and figures about the bridge.
“We are so pleased to see Angela’s dream come true and the world become more accessible for her,” Executive Director of The Arc-Dane County Anne Stevens said. “The Arc-Dane County was honored to be a part of this project.”
The trip was made possible with help from The Arc Dane County, Dane County Regional Airport, Delta Airlines and Visit San Francisco, the release said.
