‘It’s devastating’: One person killed in Jefferson Co. house explosion

TOWN OF SULLIVAN, Wis. — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department says one person is dead after a house explosion Tuesday afternoon.

Emergency crews were called to the area of Water and Milwaukee Streets for the explosion. Authorities say the person who died was inside the home when it exploded and was the only person home when it happened.

“We have had our chance to speak to the family, and it’s tragic,” said Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Inspector Jeffrey Parker. “It’s devastating. They’ve lost a loved one.”

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office says the explosion also damaged the siding of nearby homes and broke windows. Some roads in the surrounding area were closed Tuesday afternoon due to debris.

The Sheriff’s Office has also asked the state fire marshal’s office and the Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation to help investigate the explosion.

Authorities say their initial investigation has found “strong indicators” that the explosion was caused by a natural gas leak, but are continuing to investigate.
