"Fifty Shades Freed" takes the series out with a whimper...
The first "Maze Runner" in 2014 evoked a terrific sense of mystery with its premise of kids trapped in a giant maze of traps. The sequel, "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," deflated that mystery and turned into a generic plot of bad adults versus good teenagers.
After the painfully long slogs that "Man of Steel," "Batman v. Superman," and "Suicide Squad" proved to be, any new movies released by comics giant DC seemed to be deserving of dread.
When a movie pairs the Norse god of thunder with a giant angry green man, it's hard to take that premise as anything other than ridiculous. And luckily for moviegoers, the team behind "Thor: Ragnarok" has as much ridiculous fun as possible with that idea, and the resulting movie is a hilarious good time. "Thor: Ragnarok" stands as one of the best Marvel movies yet.
When hearing that a film is written by the Coen brothers, is directed by George Clooney, and stars Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, and Oscar Isaac, it's difficult not to expect great things from the resulting motion picture.
Roaring onto Netflix, skipping theaters and arriving directly into viewers's homes is "Wheelman," a claustrophobic and highly effective thriller involving a guy driving around for 80 minutes. On the surface, that doesn't sound too riveting, but "Wheelman" manages to rev up the tension to an insane degree, making this one car trip viewers won't soon forget.
These days action movies are more likely to be populated by actors over the age of 50 than young up-and-comers.
2014's "The Lego Movie" was a hilarious, fast-paced blast of a movie with heart to boot. This year's "The Lego Batman Movie" and now "The Lego Ninjago Movie" have both kept the frenetic pace, but haven't been able to match the original's funniness or emotional impact.
Take a healthy heaping of Jason Bourne, mix with the essence of Tom Clancy, and top with Michael Keaton to get yourself "American Assassin." Now remove anything that makes those three elements unique and you have the experience of watching this film.
