Attorney general hopeful reeling under GOP barrage
Poll shows Schimel even with Happ
MADISON, Wis. — Democratic attorney general hopeful Susan Happ was riding high a month ago, coming off a big win in the party primary and entering the general election race leading Republican Brad Schimel.
What a difference a few weeks make.
Conservative groups have been pounding Happ, digging up stories about plea deals she brokered as a Jefferson County prosecutor that they say show she’s soft on crime. Her campaign has been forced to play defense, leaving it unable to change the dialogue in the race.
The latest Marquette University Law School poll shows Schimel has pulled even with Happ. Schimel issued a statement this week accusing Happ of hiding and hoping.
Happ’s campaign had no immediate comment.
