Amtrak train derails over I-5 in Washington state

Amtrak said the 501 train travels from Seattle to Portland, Oregon.

Train parts could be seen on Interstate 5.

The NTSB says the train was traveling 80 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Pierce County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Ed Troyer said the scene is "pretty horrific."

Injuries have been reported among the motorists on the the free whose vehicles were struck by falling train cars, Pierce County reported.

The train was on its inaugural trip on a new service route.

Train cars were seen dangling from a bridge over the interstate.

The derailment happened near the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge in Dupont, about 20 miles south of Tacoma.

Officials said three people were killed in wreck.
