Alvin Burns, age 88, passed away on June 27, 2014 in Madison, WI. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the second youngest of six children to Martin C. Burns and Leah (Lowenthal) Burns.
Alvin graduated from St. John’s University in 1947 and was a pharmacist until he was 84 years young. Throughout his life he was the proprietor of Rex Drugs in Bethlehem, NH, Burns Pharmacy in New City, NY, and with classmate Ed Chudnofsky, owned Mayfair Chemists in Greenwich Village, NYC. Even in his early 80s he continued to work at Koblin’s Pharmacy in Nyack, NY.
Flea markets and antiquing brought Alvin great pleasure, and he enjoyed both holding and attending garage sales. He loved the camaraderie that surrounded them. Alvin had a strong sense of family, and he loved a good story.
Alvin married Sandra Burns in 1960 and has two children, Janet L. Burns (Lorne Wolfe) and Martin C. Burns (Kimberly Olson), who survive him. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Laura Burns and Weston Burns, and three nieces and two nephews. He enjoyed the last 3 years living at Capital Lakes near his son and grandchildren in Madison, Wisconsin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Jerome, Jack, and Howard; sisters Sylvia Radwin and Frances Berg; and nephew Mark Radwin.
Arrangements: A Celebration of Life was held on June 30, 2014 at Capital Lakes in Madison, WI.
A memorial service will be held at 12:45p.m. July 27, 2014 at Hellman Memorial Chapels, 15 State Street, Spring Valley, NY 10977.
Memorial contributions may be made in Alvin’s name to the California Institute for Yiddish Culture and Language (CIYCL) or Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).
