“All clear” given to 60-80 homes evacuated in Sun Prairie after officials responded to gas leak

About 60 to 80 homes were evacuated in Sun Prairie for a gas leak reported around 8:25 p.m. Friday, according to officials with the Sun Prairie Fire Department.

Officials said the evacuation is mandatory and that evacuees are to report to Sun Prairie High School or leave the area. In an update at 10:15 p.m., Sun Prairie officials said they are no longer evacuating homes but people should still avoid the area.

Fire officials said in a news conference that they hope to have people back in their homes by midnight.

“This is an active situation with no estimated ETA of return,” the release said. “We will advise when the area is safe to return and we appreciate your cooperation.”

Officials said while the alert was urgent, there is “minimal to no known threat to life or property.” Officials told News 3 the evacuation was a precautionary measure.

The evacuation is in the area within a half mile of the intersection of Main Street and White Tail Drive. Dane County dispatchers said the call reporting the gas leak came in at 8:25 p.m. Friday.

All east and westbound lanes of WIS 19 from Grove Street to Town Hall Road are closed while officials respond to a utility emergency, according to a release from the Department of Transportation.

WE Energies did not immediately provide a comment. They repaired two leaks related to the incident, the fire department said.

The all clear was given around 11:30 p.m. All residents were able to return to their homes.

The Red Cross and a Madison Metro bus assisted with residents displaced during the evacuation.
