Family and city staff joined Morales as he received his Fitchburg badge Friday.

Morales had served as police chief in Milwaukee before being demoted in July.

His demotion stemmed from his handling of protests in the summer of 2020. Morales retired before the demotion took effect, and later sued the city to get his job back.

A Milwaukee County judge ruled in May that Morales should be reinstated as chief unless he reached a settlement with the city, which he ultimately did.

Fitchburg named Morales as one of four finalists for the position in July.
