Albert ‘Sonny’ ‘Al’ Everson Jr.

Albert Sonny Al Everson Jr

Albert (Sonny) “Al” Everson, Jr., 82, passed away peacefully at home on July 31, 2021.

He was the son of the late Albert and Elsie (Sturdevant) Everson, born on July 19th, 1939 in Dodgeville, Wisconsin weighing around three pounds and arrived home in a shoebox. He was a very proud graduate from the Avoca School in 1958, third in his class…out of four.

He was a 61-year member of the Wisconsin Laborer’s Union Local 464, spending the last 13 working years at Tri-North Builders. He also held multiple jobs including work as a farm-hand (Carl Johnson) , coal shoveler (Joe Egan), and at the Avoca Feed Mill.

Sonny was very active in his community, having held many roles including Fire Chief with 60+ years as an honorary member. He was chairman of the Avoca Village Board, Rod and Gun Club member, participated in the hillbilly plays, and flew the kite for the Avoca Aquanauts Ski Club. He was one of the founding members of the Avoca Fisheree, dedicating 32 years to raising funds to benefit the fire department before semi-retiring.

If you saw Sonny out and about, you were guaranteed to buy a raffle ticket from him, or possibly spot him walking around in his famous bikini or playing Santa Claus. He enjoyed putting smiles on everyone’s faces. He was an avid outdoorsman and competed in trap shooting, basketball, softball, canoe racing, and fire department water fights. He had a well-known green thumb and grew a field of vegetables that could feed a village.

Sonny was preceded in death by his mother and father, half-brother Virgil Everson, and several aunts and uncles.

He is survived by the love of his life, Sue K. Everson, with whom he spent 27 wonderful years not listening to. They were married on June 30, 2001 at the Avoca United Methodist Church. The two enjoyed spending time with family and friends, taking trips to Wyoming and Northern Wisconsin, watching their beloved Green Bay Packers, hunting, fishing, gardening, making sauerkraut for the whole town, or gallivanting through the countryside in Old Blue.

Sonny’s pride and joys were his children and grandchildren. His legacy lives on through Shawn (Sara) Everson, James (Paula) Everson, Mark (Sarah) Cockroft, Heather (Benjamin) Ludy, Danielle Cockroft; and grandchildren: Katrina, Noah, Tristan, Wiley, Allie, Miles, Cora, Ember, a grandson and granddaughter to be born later this year; and three great-grandchildren.

He was Wisconsin’s social butterfly; everywhere he went, people knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and community.

Funeral services are pending with the Godager Pratt Funeral Home.
