A Vote For Healthy Food

It is a testament to the political environment in this country today that we ask support for an imperfect bill on school food policy and resources. If we can’t agree on the health and welfare of our kids, to say nothing of sound disease prevention and cost effective health efforts, what can we agree on? But in this case a half a loaf is definitely better than none and so we urge the House of Representatives to reauthorize the Child Nutrition Act before it expires on Thursday. While short on necessary funding, and with unnecessary meddling in food stamp benefits, the act does address issues of hunger and childhood obesity that are interfering with our kids’ health and ability to learn. The long term consequences of both are staggering.

Work to improve the bill can begin on Friday. In the meantime we ask the Representatives in our area to vote in favor of the Child Nutrition Act and support healthy food in our schools.
