A new west side taco spot
Treat yourself at Los Atlantes
The backstory: Husband and wife Felipe Falcon and Nancy Barrera, along with Falcon’s brother Alfonso Falcon, have brought a friendly restaurant and bakery to an area on the west side with otherwise sparse food options. Felipe and Barrera moved to Madison from Hidalgo, Mexico, in 1999, and they’ve managed other restaurants in Madison before opening their own eatery, Los Atlantes.
The vibe: Walking through the small storefront in a corner of the Meadowood Shopping Center, you’ll find a few tables and booths, a large bakery case and ice cream cooler to the right and another bakery case and a counter in the back.
The menu: Creating the menu was easy, Barrera says. “Everyone cooks in Mexico,” she says. Staples including quesadillas, mole chicken, enchiladas and spicy shrimp are on the menu, along with a few breakfast options.
The must-try: The Los Atlantes tacos are a signature dish loaded with your choice of meat, cilantro, onions, sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, jalapeños and cheese. For dessert, order a piece of heavenly homemade tres leches cake complete with an airy whipped-cream frosting. While employee Israel Cortez makes many of the bakery items, Falcon often makes the tres leches cake himself.
The bottom line: Los Atlantes is the kind of place to sate your midweek Mexican food craving by either picking up a to-go order or enjoying a quick dine-in meal. It’s also one of few places along Raymond Road where you can grab delicious fresh-baked items including cheesecake tarts, conchas and other pastries and desserts.
