6-year-old girl buys birthday gifts for children in need

Generosity recognized with $500 grant

For two years Maycee Wells has been buying birthday gifts for children in need.

Her efforts did not go unnoticed, and the Walt Disney Company has awarded the 6-year-old a $500 Summer of Service grant.

Maycee started purchasing birthday gifts for underprivileged children through the Box of Balloons program. The organization directs donated children’s birthday gifts to community organizations serving families in need.

Maycee plans to use the $500 grant to purchase birthday presents and give them to community service agencies.

“Because when other people don’t have birthdays it makes them feel bad, so I want to make them be happy,” Maycee said.

Maycee attends Northside Elementary School and they are supporting her efforts by collecting birthday supplies. The donated items and those purchased by Maycee will be given to the service agencies at an assembly on Feb. 22 at Northside Elementary School.
