6 Ways to Wear Denim This Summer
When the temps rise you’re probably thinking about pulling out your summer sundresses and floaty, filmy tank tops, right? But just because summer sun calls for all of those fun wardrobe add-ons it doesn’t mean you have to ditch the denim, too. Here are my six favorite denim trends for this summer–and be sure to check out images of each style in the slideshow, too.
Also, be sure to watch my Live at Five appearance (below the post) from last week to check out my picks and what to pair them with.
A summer staple, white denim never goes out of style. Take your pick of style that you like—whether it’s distressed, skinny, cropped or boot cut—they’re all great options. The DL1961 Cindy slim boot cut jeans from Shopbop is a nice pick.
This ’90s throwback style is for the bold at heart. If you’re game to try this trend my recommendation is to cuff the bottoms and pair these with a cute slip-on sneaker and slouchy striped tee for a casual look or dress them up a bit and strap on a pair of wedges and black tank or tee and add on statement earrings or a cuff. This pair of Blank Denim overalls from Shopbop is a versatile style.
This longer inseam length is really popular this summer—and for good reason. Most women can wear it and it’s great if you like more leg coverage. Find a slouchy, distressed pair and wear them with a tucked-in shirt or an open-knit sleeveless tank or find a crisp, fitted style you like and pair ’em with a graphic tunic or floaty lace top. A good rule of thumb is if your bottoms have a looser, relaxed fit go with a more fitted top to avoid looking sloppy. If your bermudas are fitted, you can get away with a looser top. This one doesn’t need too much of an explanation and in fact, you might already have a jean jacket. I love the look of a medium-wash jacket with a maxi skirt and tank, maxidress or skinnies and a crisp white button-up for a dressier look. Oh, and you can pair denim with denim—just make sure the washes contrast with one another. AG Adriano Goldschmied’s “Robyn” jacket is a great pick.
Because of the masculine look of this style of jean, I suggest rounding out your ensemble with feminine add-ons. I love the look of a graphic, floaty tank, crisp little blazer and pointy-toe heels paired with this style. It’s best to avoid very loose tops, polos and non-dressy T-shirts with this style of jean since the look can become sloppy quickly. The Dylan jeans by Citizens of Humanity from Twigs are a flattering pair.
I always think of a 19050s Hollywood starlet wearing a crisp pair of dark denim crops and a cute sleeveless button-up tied at the waist in this look. (If you like that idea, wear it!). This summer’s crops have a few stylish twists like pre-cuffed styles and high-waisted silhouettes. For the adventurous a high-waisted silhouette looks killer with this season’s cropped tops. A cuffed pair is fun with a sleeveless, untucked blouse, statement necklace and wedges, or a boxy top for a fun contrast. Mother’s “The Muse” ankle straight skinny jeans are a go-with-everything style.
