40-year-old Wisconsin Dells man dies in drowning at Newport Park in Lake Delton
LAKE DELTON, Wis. — A 40-year-old Wisconsin Dells man died after drowning in the Wisconsin River in Lake Delton on Wednesday.
Lake Delton police said in a release that first responders were dispatched to Newport Park at 1:06 p.m. Wednesday for reports of a man who had gone underwater and failed to resurface.
Officials said the Lake Delton Fire Department was able to deploy a boat and pull the man from the water within minutes.
Dells-Delton EMS delivered life support protocols in an effort to revive the man but were unsuccessful, according to the release.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene by the Sauk County Coroner.
Police said the man possessed limited swimming ability and was wading in shallow water near a steep underwater drop. The man was seen struggling in the water and went under before bystanders could reach him, per the release.
Officials said the man was “enjoying the day at Newport Park with his family.” They are withholding his name pending notification of family.
