Madison police said four Madison men face numerous charges after they stole some cell phones from two Chicago men, then started firing on them from a van near East Towne Mall Thursday afternoon.

Police said Victor Booker, 18, Devonere Johnson, 24, Kelsey Nelson, 26, and Jessie Ferguson, 27, all face charges of first-degree reckless endangering safety and armed robbery.

According to police, the two Chicago men met with the four Madison men near East Towne Thursday afternoon in order to buy and sell some cellphones. Police said the plans went awry when the Madison men robbed them of the phones and money at gunpoint.

Police said after they were robbed, the victims decided to follow the Madison men while calling police. The Chicago men said at some point, a door of the van carrying the Madison men slid open and one of the men began firing multiple rounds at them.

Police said there was other traffic in the area at the time, and one eyewitness told officers the shots were fired on Bartillon Drive, near Portage Road. According to police, the van stopped in the 3800 block of Hanson Road as the suspects ran away.

Several law enforcement agencies helped take all four men into custody thanks to cooperative law enforcement work from several agencies. Police said a stolen handgun was found inside the abandoned van.
