Indie Coffee
If patrons aren’t going to Indie Coffee for the morning brew, they’re after the waffles. For this Regent Street coffeehouse, waffles make up about a third of the food menu and come in both specialty and build-your-own options. House favorites include classics like chocolate chip or a red + white waffle, as well as more intricate options like “the works,” which is waffle batter with baked-in walnuts and a generous topping of chocolate chips, vanilla whipped cream and house-made strawberry sauce. 1225 Regent St., 259-9621, indiecoffee.net

Lazy Jane’s Cafe
Waffles at Lazy Jane’s Cafe are kept simple with no frills. Customers can order a plain waffle with no toppings, or a waffle topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit. To dress things up a bit more, there’s a third option with pecans, bananas and maple syrup. Apart from waffles, Lazy Jane’s offers a sizable menu of breakfast foods and lunch, with vegetarian and vegan options — like seitan hash or curried tofu scramble. 1358 Williamson St., 257-5263

Madison Chocolate Co.
Chocolate bars and other confections aren’t the only things you’ll find at Madison Chocolate Co. The cafe and bakery has a full menu of espresso drinks and tea along with an assortment of fresh pastries. But on the weekends, it’s all about the waffles. On Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Madison Chocolate Co. offers a limited menu of gluten-free waffles. Each weekend the flavors change, but there’s almost always an option with fresh fruit toppings. 729 Glenway St., 286-1154, madisonchocolatecompany.com

Yola’s Cafe
Waffles are a big deal at Yola’s Cafe, which is named after owner Lance Ratze’s grandmother who loved to cook. The west-side restaurant serves breakfast all day and is famous for its golden Belgian waffle recipe. If it’s Wednesdays at Yola’s Cafe, that means $1 off waffles with a purchase of a drink. There’s also a dedicated “Waffle of the Month” that raises funds for local nonprofits. 494 Commerce Drive, 827-5800, yolascafe.com
