We had to make room for the local ladies of pottery, whose hands are forever caked in clay so we can wrap ours around beautiful bowls and cups.

Madison’s Fine Earth Studio & Gallery, located on Regent Street, is the place to pick out a vessel (or two or three) for this season’s cup of hot cocoa. Owner and artist Sara Gordon makes items for the home–ceramic mugs and bowls as well as kitchen utensil holders–in her neighborhood studio. Picking out a handmade mug, she says, is a personal experience. It should feel comfortable and at home in your hands. You can also take a class with some friends and make one at the wheel yourself. A little-known fact: When she first opened her studio, Sara made 1,000 white bowls in order to perfect her craft, numbering each one. They’re in the shop for purchase.

Jennifer Darner Wolfe is the potter behind JD Wolfe Pottery, and her beautifully thrown and glazed heart-shaped nesting bowls, plates and cups are rustic and timeless. Working from a home studio, she focuses on online sales and has worked with major brands such as Pottery Barn, Anthropologie and terrain. She can be found on Etsy.

At Toast Ceramics, Jackie Matelski works out of her garage studio in Madison making items such as pour-over coffee mug sets, tea infuser mugs and French butter dishes–items that create things that go well with toast! The pottery looks divine–maybe even a bit cheeky, as her pieces are finished with bright colors and boldly drawn lines–on a Scandinavian-inspired breakfast table. Shop online at toastceramics.com.

Ashley Pfannenstiel of Wilson Creek Pottery makes functional and fabulous stoneware dinnerware sets, including stemless wine glasses in muted shades of white, black, blue and green. Experience pure excitement, especially at this time of year, looking over her pie plates online or at her shop and studio in Spring Green. Shop online at wilsoncreekpottery.com.
