3 wine bars that let you pour your own wine

Sure, it’s nice to order a glass of wine and have it brought to your table, but there’s also something to be said for the simple joy of pouring it yourself, as a trio of wine bars in our area prove.

Our self-service tour starts in Verona, where Toot + Kate’s Wine Bar (109 South Main St.) — the dream project of a pair of sisters and a frequent Best of Madison award winner — offers visitors a rotating set of eight white and eight red wines on tap. Select one of three sizes: a 2.5-ounce glass to taste, a 5-ounce regular serving or a 7-ounce glass for those times when your pick is a real winner.

Slide over to Middleton and you’ll find a similar vibe at Grape Water Wine Bar (7466 Hubbard Ave.). Owner Nicki Prestigiacomo offers a menu of 15 red and white wines, as well as bourbon on tap. It’s casual and cozy here, almost as if you had a much larger living room and invited your friends over for wine.

Our final stop requires a slightly longer drive from Madison — out to Cross Plains, where Nineteen09 (1909 Main St.). The Ripp family opened the business in July 2019 with 16 wine selections on tap, including the Riesling from Botham Vineyards. Better still? You can rent a globe on the patio, so cold spring temperatures can’t spoil your experience.
