3 seriously injured when vehicle flees police, hits tree
McFarland officer helps 3 injured occupants out of smoking vehicle
MCFARLAND, Wis. — Three people were seriously injured after a vehicle that fled police crashed early Tuesday morning, according to a release.
Around 2 a.m. a McFarland police officer observed a vehicle leaving the parking lot of the Kwik Trip gas station at Highway 51 and Farwell Street at a high rate of speed. The officer said the vehicle went north on Highway 51 at a high rate of speed.
The officer tried to catch up with the vehicle, but the driver continued at a high speed and turned onto residential streets, according to the release. The officer stopped pursuing the vehicle, but saw the vehicle fail to negotiate a sharp curve on Taylor Road near the intersection with Farwell Street.
The vehicle hit a tree, and because the car smoking, the officer started helping the three injured occupants out of the vehicle, officials said. All three occupants were seriously injured and were hospitalized.
The driver, Freddie E. Sparks-Ward, 27, has been tentatively charged with operating while intoxicated causing injury.
