3 Madison places with surprising wine lists
Wine expert Michael Kwas dishes on three...
Madison sports some of the hippest wine lists in the Midwest, carefully selected, well-priced, off-the-beaten-path varietals that highlight small producers and rising stars. Such wines sometimes appear where you may not expect them, such as these.
Insiders know that Gretchen Hils has been choosing wines of great integrity and pricing them attractively for more than two decades. Italians are the natural choice, but consider also more esoteric varietals such as Grüner Veltliner and Helioterra’s Muscadet.
This is to be expected, I know, but it is also worth a special mention because each of Bob Hemauer’s selections is so compelling. It’s really hard to choose here, with authoritative producers such as Marcel Lapierre, Selbach-Oster and Occhipinti highlighting this affordable list.
Blue Spoon Cafe
I came for gelato and fell in love with the wines in this cheerful cafe in Prairie du Sac, especially the Domaine Huet Vouvrays and the carefully chosen, artisanal California Pinot Noirs.
