3 juveniles arrested following school shooting threat in Poynette
POYNETTE, Wis. — The Poynette Police Department said they took three juveniles into custody after investigating a school shooting threat on social media.
Each juvenile is being charged with terroristic threats.
In a press release the department said the school district contacted police on Saturday about the online threat.
After an investigation by the Poynette Police Department and the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, the three juveniles were arrested and transported to a juvenile detention center.
“The Poynette Police Department as well as the Poynette School District take these types of threats seriously,” said police in the release.
Police said there is no danger to the community, students or school campus. The district said “students and staff are safe and at no time were they in any danger.”
The School District of Poynette released a statement on Facebook Sunday night calling the incident a “teachable moment.”
“‘Intent’ cannot always be determined from a social media post, but it is vitally important to understand that “what we say matters,'” District Administrator Matt Shappell said in a letter to the community.
The district is encouraging parents to monitor their children’s online activity.
“If you see something, please say something immediately,” said Shappell.
The district said they did not alert parents about the threat earlier because police asked the administration not to in order to protect the investigation process.
There will be additional staff at the schools to offer support for students on Monday. The district has also requested law enforcement be there Monday morning “for the reassuring effect.”
