3 in custody in connection with Fitchburg homicide investigation

Three men are in custody Wednesday in connection with an investigation into the shooting death of a man Monday afternoon in Fitchburg, police said.

Fitchburg police Chief Chad Brecklin said during a news conference Wednesday morning that Gary C. Mays, 18, and Joshua B. Mcinnis, 17, and Travon A. Jackson, 19, are in custody in connection with the death of 20-year-old Julian J. Patterson.

Patterson, of Fort Atkinson, was shot at about 5:45 p.m. Monday in the 5100 block of Anton Drive. He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Brecklin said Patterson was with a friend on Anton Drive for a drug deal Monday when a fright broke out. One man fired a single gunshot, striking Patterson.

Police said Jackson arranged the drug deal, and he was taken into custody Tuesday in Columbus.

Mays and Mcinnis were arrested Tuesday night during a traffic stop on Todd Drive and the Beltline.

Mays, Mcinnis and Jackson were booked into Dane County Jail in connection to another alleged crime in Fitchburg in December, according to a news release. The incident involved physical abuse of a child.

Brecklin said investigators are not seeking additional suspects and police believe they have all parties who were involved in the incident in custody. Police expect prosecutors to file charges related to the homicide investigation later this week.
