26-year-old shot, killed by police in Walworth County
DCI investigating officer-involved shooting
TOWN OF GENEVA, Wis. — The sheriff’s office identified the man who was killed by law enforcement near Elkhorn Thursday night during a reckless driving investigation, officials said.
The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office said a deputy and an Elkhorn police officer were investigating a reckless driving complaint on County Road H near Petrie Road in the town of Geneva.
At around 7:45 p.m., police shot and killed 26-year-old Kris Kristl, of Lake Geneva, officials said.
No police officers were hurt in the shooting, officials said.
The Walworth County deputy has been with the department for two years and has a total of six years of law enforcement experience, according to a release Friday. The Elkhorn officer has been with Elkhorn department for about eight years.
Both officers have been placed on administrative duty, which is standard practice with these types of incidents, the sheriff’s office said.
The state Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation is investigating.
Walworth County Sheriff Kurt Picknell said Thursday that the investigation was in the early stages and more information will be released when appropriate.”
Officials have not released details about what led up to the shooting.
