2 injured in crash, driver arrested on OWI charge
Crews called to scene to secure bridge railing
JANESVILLE, Wis. — Janesville police said the driver of a vehicle was arrested on a charge of operating while intoxicated causing injury following a crash early Sunday morning.
Police said the single-vehicle crash happened just before 2:30 a.m. on the Milwaukee Street Bridge.
The driver, Veronica Walker, 25, of Janesville, and a passenger were transported to Mercy Hospital and Trauma Center by ambulance for treatment of injuries, police said.
Police said a second passenger was arrested on a probation violation and transported to the Rock County Jail.
Based on a witness statement and observations at the crash scene, the driver was speeding west on West Milwaukee Street when the vehicle jumped the south side curb, entered the sidewalk and struck the bridge railing, causing severe damage to the vehicle and bridge railing, according to a Janesville Police Department news release.
The vehicle then spun around, struck the railing with the rear portion of the vehicle and came to rest facing in a northbound direction on the sidewalk just east of the Riverfront Athletic Club, police said.
The City of Janesville Street Department was dispatched to the scene to secure approximately 30 feet of bridge railing.
Estimates were not available for repair and replacement of the cement railing.
