Two people were injured in a three-vehicle chain-reaction crash northwest of Monroe Wednesday morning, officials said.

Around 7:45 a.m. Green County emergency officials received reports of a three-vehicle crash on Highway 81 at County Road M in the town of Jordan, according to a release.

Investigators said an eastbound vehicle driven by Luann J. Smith, 46, of Darlington, was stopped in traffic on Highway 81 at County Road M waiting for a vehicle to turn north on County Road M.

A second eastbound vehicle, being driven by Mary F. Heinberg, 50, of Darlington, was stopped behind Smith’s vehicle when a third eastbound vehicle, driven by Thomas G. Krenz, 23, of Blanchardville, rear-ended Heinberg’s vehicle, according to the release.

The force of the crash caused Heinberg’s vehicle to rear-end Smith’s vehicle, officials said. Smith and Heinberg were wearing seat belts, but they were injured.

Heinberg was transported to the Monroe Clinic Hospital by Argyle EMS, according to the release. Smith refused medical treatment. Krenz was not injured in the accident.

Krenz was cited for inattentive driving and released pending court.
