19-year-old pedestrian struck, seriously injured by drunken driver, police say
A 19-year-old was seriously injured when she was struck early Saturday by a reportedly drunken driver as she crossed a downtown Madison street, police said.
The Madison Police Department said the University of Wisconsin-Madison student was attempting to cross West Johnson Street just east of the intersection with North Frances Street at 12:46 a.m. when she was struck by a vehicle.
Police said 22-year-old Emily L. Schumacher told police she had been drinking. An officer gave her field sobriety tests and Schumacher was arrested on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated causing injury.
The pedestrian was taken to the hospital for significant injuries, police said.
West Johnson Street at North Frances Street was shut down for about 1 hour, police said.
