16-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Dies After Swimming

A Sun Prairie 16-year-old who was healthy after two bouts of cancer has died suddenly after swim practice.

WISC-TV reports that Jay Haraldson collapsed Thursday at Sun Prairie High School after practice the practice. His coach and bystanders performed CPR, and Haraldson was taken to the hospital where he died.

Haraldson was a survivor of soft-tissue cancer but was in remission and planning to attend a survivor camp this weekend.

His coach, Nancy Harms, remembers him is a positive, dedicated athlete. She said tests are being done to determine why he died.

A visitation is being held Sunday and Monday at St. Albert’s Church in Sun Prairie, with a funeral Monday at 11 a.m.
