130 taps make for Madison’s biggest selection
The cat's meow: Get hooked on HopCat's Bar Zee burger, a side of specialty Crack Fries and a cup of five-pepper chili (back). The burger patty is more than meets the eye—it's made in-house using ground chuck, chorizo and brisket.

Two floors and two bars lined with 130 taps make for Madison’s biggest beer selection. Thirty are locally brewed and others are found rarely elsewhere. Just off State Street, the new HopCat is the sixth location for this Midwestern purveyor of twenty-first-century, American-style gemütlichkeit. Not surprisingly, the food is over the top. Lots of outrageous starters include log-sized tater tots with dip. One of numerous outlandish burgers is the house specialty, the Bar Zee, topped with applewood-smoked bacon, pickled jalapeños and cheese. Most venerated, however, are the award-winning Crack fries, beer-battered and available loaded.
