1 killed, 1 injured in crash that shut down I-39/90 southbound near Janesville, police say

One person died and another was injured in a crash that shut down the interstate near Janesville for several hours Tuesday morning, police said.

First responders were called out to mile post 177, on I-39, around 5 a.m.

A semi was headed southbound when it was struck from behind by a Ford F350 pickup truck, according to a release from Wisconsin State Patrol. The pickup truck continued driving until it became disabled in the left lane. Soon after, the pickup was struck from behind by someone driving a Chevy Silverado.

The driver of the Silverado, a 23-year-old man from Milton, died, according to the release. The driver of the Ford pickup, a 34-year-old man from Madison, suffered minor injuries. A 38-year-old man from Sun Prairie was driving the semi and was not injured.

Names of those involved are not being released at this time.

The second crash blocked traffic in the southbound lanes of I-39/90 for four hours, according to Wisconsin State Patrol. The crash also impacted a northbound lane of I-39/90 near Avalon Road in Janesville.

Traffic was backed up for more than five miles after the crash.

The Janesville Police Department said traffic was being re-routed east on Highway 11/14 to Highway 140. The DOT said the detour took drivers south on Highway 140 to I-43, and then south back onto I-39.
