A couple of weather systems will bring snow and extreme wind chills to parts of southern Wisconsin for the New Year.

A clipper system will move out of the northwest through this evening, bringing 1 to 2 inches of snow to southern Wisconsin. News 3 Meteorologist Karin Swanson said the system will impact southern Wisconsin during the afternoon and evening commute.

Even though accumulations will be light, roads may become slippery. Because of the cold temperatures, salt will not be effective, potentially causing some travel difficulties.

Swanson said  a wind chill advisory has been posted until noon Tuesday for areas north of Wisconsin Dells for wind chills as cold as 30 degrees below zero.

Another wave of low pressure will build into Wisconsin on Tuesday afternoon. This will be a longer-duration event, with snow continuing into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has already issued a winter weather advisory for much of southern Wisconsin beginning Tuesday afternoon and evening and continuing through Wednesday morning.

Two to 5 inches of snow may accumulate through New Year's Eve night, followed by another 1-2 inches of snow on New Year's Day. The heaviest snow accumulations are expected in the south, along the Wisconsin Illinois state line.

Madison city plow and sand crews have been out since the snow started to fall Monday night, according to streets superintendent Chris Kelley. He said crews are focusing on the 32 main routes, which incorporate the main arterial streets, main connector streets, Madison Metro bus routes and streets around schools and hospitals.

With extreme cold hitting the area, local organizations are opening as warming shelters over the next couple of days.
