In 2005, Wisconsin had 62 documented tornadoes resulting in one fatality and 17 injuries.

There have been 1,325 documented tornadoes in Wisconsin since 1844 causing 510 deaths and at least 2996 injuries.

Data prior to 1950 is incomplete because in many cases. Only large tornadoes were reported and some rural tornadoes were unreported.

The yearly average number of tornadoes in Wisconsin is 20.

The year of 2005 had the greatest state total with 62 tornadoes.

Wisconsin's worst tornado occurred June 12, 1899 at New Richmond in St. Croix county killing 117, injuring 125 and destroying over 300 buildings.

Other costly Wisconsin tornadoes:

  • Oakfield in Fond Du Lac County on July 18, 1996, injuring only 12 with damage pegged at $40.4 million.

  • Barneveld in Iowa County on June 8, 1984, killed nine and injuring 200 with damaged pegged at $40 million.

There are 30 to 40 thunderstorms per year in any Wisconsin county.

NWS offices issue on average less than three tornado warnings and 3 to 8 severe thunderstorm warnings per county per year.

In addition, the NWS issues on average 38 tornado and severe thunderstorm watches, combined, per year that cover at least some part of Wisconsin.

Nationwide, over 25 percent of tornado deaths in the last decade occurred in mobile homes.
