Hail Damage, Flooding Reported As Storms Crawl Across State
Storms Spark Tornado, Flash Flood Warnings

MADISON, Wis. -- Summer storms rolled through the southern portion of the state Monday evening, triggering multiple tornado and flash flood warnings in several counties and causing scattered reports of damage.
SLIDESHOW: See Monday's Storm, Damage PhotosThe storms began to move through the state shortly before 5 p.m. Tornado warning were issued for portions of Crawford, Richland, Columbia, Green Lake, Grant, Marquette, Sauk, Lafayette and Dodge counties. A flash flood warning remains in effect until 10:30 p.m. for Iowa and southwestern Sauk counties and in Lafayette County until 11 p.m.Slow-moving thunderstorms capable of producing very heavy rainfall are moving across Iowa, Grant and northern Lafayette counties. Rainfall amounts across Lafayette County will likely range from 2 to 4 inches over the next few hours, according to the National Weather Service.There were scattered reports of hail damage, trees and power lines down and some flooding because of the earlier storms.WISC-TV meteorologist Gary Cannalte said that there was an unconfirmed report of a tornado touchdown near Mount Sterling in Crawford County. Trained weather spotters reported a tornado on the ground late Monday afternoon four miles north of Mount Sterling, WKBT-TV in La Crosse reported.WKBT-TV reported that the Sparta area sustained damage in the storms.Law enforcement also reported damage to a building one mile north of Soldiers Grove, at the intersection of Highway 61 and Tavern Road, WKBT-TV reported. There are also numerous reports of trees down four miles east of Sparta, near the intersection of county highways AA and A.The Richland County Sheriff's Department said they've received reports of power lines and crops down in the northern portion of the county and small hail north of Richland Center. Lt. Bob Frank said that north of Richland Center, a trained weather spotter registered winds above 130 mph in the Gillingham area.Richland County authorities are reporting three roads closed in the county because of flash flooding: County Highway DD, County Highway AA and SR and state Highway 60, between County Highway E and Muscoda.The Marquette County Sheriff's Department said that they've received reports of multiple trees down, which is affecting travel in some areas. Highway 23 west of 10th is blocked while County Highway C, between Montello and Packwaukee is totally blocked. County Highway K, between Montello and Packwaukee, is blocked.Iowa County Sheriff Steve Michek said that there is heavy rain in areas and small hail, but no building or property damage reports at this point.The Crawford County Sheriff's Department said that they received reports that one barn was destroyed and a farm was evacuated because of a gas leak. The farm will remain evacuated all night as they're just letting the tank drain itself.A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 9 p.m. for most of the southern part of the state.
