Authorities Report Tornadoes, 5 Injured

Storms Knock Down Power Lines

Authorities in central Wisconsin said that at least five people have been hurt as tornadoes and powerful storms ripped through the area Saturday.

A tornado watch remains in effect for all of southern Wisconsin until 3 a.m. Sunday.

A line of severe storms blew across central and southeastern Wisconsin with baseball-sized hail and winds howling up to 70 mph that knocked off roofs and downed power lines.

Heavy rains also pelted the area, causing flash flooding.

A flash flood warning is in effect for Sauk and western Columbia counties until 8:30 p.m. Saturday. A flash flood warning is in effect for Juneau, Vernon and southern Monroe counties until 9:15 p.m. Saturday. A flash flood warning means that flooding is occurring or imminent, and that people in the warned area should move to higher ground immediately.

A flash flood watch has been issued for Grant County from 7 p.m. Saturday through Sunday morning. A flash flood watch has also been issued for Dane, Green, Iowa, Lafayette, Rock, Sauk and Jefferson counties from 7 p.m. Saturday through Sunday evening.

Lori Getter, spokeswoman for Wisconsin Emergency Management, said that five people suffered minor injuries in the Village of Randolph after a house had its windows blown out. A shed was destroyed and a silo was also badly damaged in Columbia County Saturday, WISC-TV reported.

Columbia County Emergency Management reported that storms ripped roofs off several house and that the eastern part of the county was hit hardest. Power outages were also reported throughout the county.

Authorities in multiple counties confirmed tornado touchdowns, while the National Weather Service said it was working to validate those reports.

Dane County Emergency Management said that small tornadoes touched down east of Cottage Grove and near the Marshall area. Officials said that damage was limited since the apparent twisters hit only farm fields.

Stoughton authorities said that sporadic storm damage was reported in Stoughton on Saturday evening. The Stoughton Fire Department Chief Martin Lamers said that that Stark Automotive Dealership and a barn off of County Highway B sustained damage due to Saturday afternoon's storms. Christ Lutheran Church on Highway B sustained structural damage to the educational wing of the building. Two houses in the Greig Trail had their roofs blown off while other homes minor structural damage, according to officials. Emergency crews were at scene and assessing damage Saturday evening.

Rock County authorities reported some pea-sized hail said that storms knocked down some trees in south and southwest areas but that there was no significant damage.

The Grant County Sheriff's Department said it spotted a tornado in the Woodman area Saturday afternoon. Dispatcher Chris Johll said the tornado touched down in a rural area and there were no injuries or damage reported. He said a deputy confirmed the tornado.

The National Weather Service in La Crosse is working to confirm potential sightings. Meteorologist Todd Shea said they're receiving reports and won't know until later whether tornadoes did touch down.

Dodge County Emergency Management reported minor damage following an unconfirmed tornado near the Village of Randolph. Officials said that one home and numerous farm buildings damaged, and that numerous trees and power lines were knocked down. Power has been mainly restored to the area Saturday evening and there were no reports of any significant injuries.
