Madison Breaks Winter Snowfall Record
Heavier Snow Possible North Of Wisconsin Dells

MADISON, Wis. -- Madison's record for winter snowfall has been broken.
VIDEO: Watch The ReportThe National Weather Service said an accumulation of 1.8 inches of snowfall overnight put Madison's total at 77.3 inches.That breaks the old mark of 76.1 inches set during the winter of 1978 and 1979. It doesn't count the additional light snowfall that continued falling in Wisconsin's capital city through Tuesday afternoon."I hope it stops soon, I'll tell you that. I'm getting real tired of it," said one area snowplow driver.Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz said the city is looking into having "I plowed through the winter of 07-08" T-shirts made up for employees in the streets, engineering and parks divisions, as well as Metro Transit employees.WISC-TV meteorologist Gary Cannalte said Tuesday night will be mostly cloudy with light snow and flurries ending, and then becoming partly cloudy and cold late.The forecast Wednesday is partly sunny and cold with a high of 22. A winter storm watch has been issued for late Wednesday night northwest of Wisconsin Dells.Cannalte said Wednesday night will be mostly cloudy and not as cold with light snow and flurries developing after midnight. Heavier snow is possible late Wednesday north of Wisconsin Dells, he said.In related news, the city of Stoughton declared a snow emergency beginning at midnight on Tuesday. Parking on city streets requires that drivers leave their vehicles on the even side of the street on even-numbered days and on the odd side of the street on odd-numbered days. Officials said that the emergency will remain in effect until three consecutive midnight to 8 a.m. periods have elapsed, or the emergency is canceled or extended.The city of Janesville declared a snow emergency, which started at 11 p.m. on Monday.
