Officials: 13 Inches Fell In Some Parts Of State

MADISON, Wis. -- About a foot of snow fell in some parts of Wisconsin on Monday and early Tuesday, making travel difficult and forcing school officials to close or delay the start of classes.About 9 to 13 inches of snow fell overnight in Washington County, where Germantown School District shut down. Slinger, Johnson Creek and Fond du Lac schools delayed the start of classes to allow buses and other vehicles make it through the snow.The National Weather Service said that 7 to 12 inches fell in Ozaukee County and 7 to 11 inches in Sheboygan County.About 7 to 8 inches fell to the west in La Crosse, Rock, Dane, Green and Lafayette counties.In Madison, traffic was slow in some parts of the city's East Side as vehicles crept along the snow-covered roads.Part of Interstate-90 near the Wisconsin-Minnesota border was closed for about two hours on Monday afternoon following a pileup on a snow-covered Mississippi River bridge.
Madison, Beloit Declare Snow Emergencies
The city of Madison declared a snow emergency on Monday, which means that alternate side parking restrictions will be in effect throughout the entire city including the downtown/isthmus snow emergency zone.During the emergency, drivers are asked to remove all vehicles from the street if possible. Those who must park on the street on Monday night should park on the even house numbered side of the street. Vehicles parked on the street on Tuesday, Jan. 22, should be parked on the odd house numbered side of the street. Officials said that violations of the alternate side parking rules are punishable by a fine of $20 outside the snow emergency zone and $30 inside.Officials said that the snow emergency will remain in effect until at least 7 a.m. on Wednesday.The city of Beloit also declared a snow emergency on Monday, which prohibts drivers from parking vehicles anywhere that interferes with snow removal and plowing operations on city streets. Officials said that the Beloit Police Department might move any vehicles to another location so as not to interfere with snow removal and plowing at the vehicle owner's expense.
