Heavy Snowfall Slows Travel In Southern Wisconsin
Cold Temperatures Coming Tuesday Night

MADISON, Wis. -- Another round of heavy snow is pummeling the southern part of Wisconsin on Tuesday, causing traffic slowdowns and leaving residents and snow removal crews busy digging out.

Snow and freezing rain is hitting southern Wisconsin, adding to the slush that caused dozens of accidents, closed schools and caused power outages on Tuesday morning.Milwaukee Public Schools and its 85,000 students are among the many districts that canceled classes. They include Waukesha, West Bend, Kenosha, Racine, Kenosha, Jefferson, Hartford, Fort Atkinson and Germantown.The Madison Metropolitan School District, however, didn't cancel classes, but is calling off most after-school and evening activities.The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Milwaukee Area Technical College also told students to stay home.The ice and sleet temporarily closed runways at General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee County and cut power to 2,200 We Energies customers.In a pre-emptive strike, highway crews blanketed roads with salt beginning last night before the wintry mix of snow and sleet moved into the region.The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Crawford and Richland counties until 6 p.m.WISC-TV chief meteorologist Gary Cannalte said that the forecast for Tuesday evening will be mostly cloudy with light snow and flurries ending and temperatures falling to the lower 20s by 10 p.m.Other forecasters said that as much as 6 inches of snow could fall in a band from Madison northeast through Fond du Lac.Tuesday night will be colder with snow tapering to flurries and ending with a low of 15 degrees, Cannalte said.Cannalte said that Wednesday will be partly sunny and cold with a high of 27 degrees.

Because of the heavy snowfall, some communities have declared snow emergencies.The city of Madison declared a snow emergency, which means that alternate side parking restrictions will be in effect throughout the entire city including the downtown/isthmus snow emergency zone. The emergency will continue through 7 a.m. on Thursday, officials said.The city of Fort Atkinson has declared a snow emergency starting at midnight on Tuesday.Learn About Area Cancellations, Closings

Waifman Early Childhood Center in Madison is closed. The Sound of Madison Holiday performance scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at Lake Edge Lutheran Church is canceled. Madison Elks Ladies Auxiliary dinner is canceled on Tuesday. Madison Elks Lodge is closed on Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Skilaufers meeting on Madison's East Side has been canceled. The leukemia/lymphoma support group for the American Cancer Society is canceled for Tuesday night. Upper Iowa University, Madison Center, has canceled all classes. The Durendal Fencing Club, which meets at the Neighborhood House Community Center, 29 S. Mills St., has canceled its meeting for Tuesday. BELOIT Merrill Community Center in Beloit has canceled all after-school programs and senior bingo. Rock County WIC Program in Beloit is closed. JANESVILLE Rock County WIC Program in Janesville is closed. Asbury United Methodist Church in Janesville has called off its annual church conference, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday night. It will be rescheduled. NEW GLARUS Small World day care has been canceled for Tuesday. OREGON Martial Arts Center of Oregon is canceling all Tuesday classes (Tots, Teens/Adults, T'ai Chi and Kickboxing). People's United Methodist Church has canceled all activities, including the annual church charge conference scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, which will be rescheduled. STOUGHTON Stoughton American Legion Post 59 has canceled a 7 p.m. prime rib supper because of the weather. SUN PRAIRIE The Public Health Immunization Clinic scheduled for Tuesday afternoon, 3 p.m. – 5 p.m., in Sun Prairie at 1460 W. Main St., has been canceled due to inclement weather. The Sun Prairie Public Library will close at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. VERONA Memorial Baptist Church of Verona has canceled Tuesday night's "Loving Touch Ministry Christmas Party."
