Badger Bus Depot Closes

New Location On City's East Side

A Madison area icon closed for good this weekend as the city's only Greyhound Bus station is moving eastward.

The last bus out of the old Badger Bus Depot left on Sunday night at 7:15 p.m., with the door closed and locked at the old building. The building's new location will have some riders traveling further to get where they're going.

Located at the corner of West Washington Avenue and Bedford Street on Madison's West Side, the old depot was a gateway to anywhere.

For frequent passenger Gongbo Zhou, it was a gateway to Chicago to see his fiancé. He's a visiting scholar from China at the University of Wisconsin. His fiancé has similar duties at Northwestern University.

"Every two weeks I will go to visit her," Zhou said.

But this Sunday was the last day this gateway will get him there.

The aging depot is closing and will be replaced with a CVS Pharmacy and apartments.

Madison Alder Mike Verveer said the new drug store means a new amenity for neighbors who also are losing one.

"So, it's three distinct apartment buildings at gradually lower levels, and then the CVS Pharmacy will have the first-floor retail space," he said.

The new bus station is on the East Side, which Verveer said will be a blow to locals.

"It seems like it's unfortunate for Greyhound customers that they aren't centrally located, certainly for my downtown constituents," he said.

The new station will be located in a strip mall just off of busy South Stoughton road. There's a Madison Metro bus stop nearby, but it's about a block down the street and only offers limited service.

Zhou said that he only had a short walk to catch a Greyhound bus before although when he returns to Madison a few days from now, not only will he have to find a way home, but a new way to make it to Chicago with less cross-town inconvenience.

He said he's thinking he'll carpool.

A Greyhound spokesperson said the new location just became final on Friday and the first bus was slated to depart Monday morning at 6:30 a.m.
