Stimulus Funds To Help Upgrade Dane County Regional Airport

Project Slated To Be Completed By December

Updated: 8:28 pm CDT March 30, 2009

The Dane County Regional Airport will be getting an upgrade thanks to the $789 billion federal economic stimulus law.

Gov. Jim Doyle said the airport will use $4 million in stimulus funds to extend a taxiway to allow aircraft and ground service vehicles to maneuver without blocking a runway.

Currently, a partial taxi-way exists on one side of the airport. This funding will complete that so it will run the fill length of the airport, WISC-TV reported.

Doyle said the project will reduce the risk of collisions and allow planes to leave and arrive more quickly. He also said it will create jobs for landscapers, pavers and other workers.

"With the Recovery and Reinvestment Act, instead of standing in the way of recovery, Wisconsin is leading efforts to put people to work and to invest in future growth," Doyle said. "It provides us with one-time funding to create jobs and to focus on building a strong infrastructure that will benefit our nation for generations."

The new taxi-way will predominately benefit business, general and cargo aviation.

Construction is expected to begin as early as June and most of it will take place this summer. It will put roughly 50 people to work.

The governor's office said the project should be done by December.
