Report Details State's Transportation Needs

Officials Say More Needed Than Federal Stimulus Funds

Updated: 11:49 am CST November 19, 2009

The state Department of Transportation said in its 20-year plan released this week that federal economic stimulus money doesn't solve immediate or long-term funding needs.

The report said that the state's highway trust fund will need significant increases beyond what the stimulus can provide.

The department said Wisconsin will receive about $530 million from the stimulus to pay for highway projects, with millions more for transit and aeronautics.

The money is being used to accelerate start dates on various projects and pay for a variety of transportation grant programs.

The department also said it plans to apply for about $500 million in stimulus money to implement high speed passenger rail service between Milwaukee and Madison.
